Rotary Charities distributes $593,000 in grants

TRAVERSE CITY — Rotary Charities recently distributed $593,413 in grants, including $40,000 to help support a merger of Child and Family Services with Third Level Crisis Intervention Center.

Rotary Charities Executive Director Marsha Smith said the proposed merger likely represents a trend among nonprofits.

“Our goal, as well as the organizations’ goals, is to find a way to provide their high-quality services in the most efficient way possible,” Smith said.

Recipients of single-year Rotary grants include Homestretch, $40,000 to enhance energy efficiency for affordable housing units; Interlochen Center for the Arts, $35,000 to support equipment upgrades for delivery of Interlochen Public Radio; Michigan Land Use Institute, $25,000 to transition the Taste the Local Difference food program to a self-supported marketing campaign; TART Trails, $50,000 to continue with Phase II of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail; Michigan Legacy Art Park, $40,000 to rebuild the entrance and re-purpose a service center drive into a barrier-free trail from the parking lot of the Art Park to an amphitheater.

Recipients of multi-year grants and renewals include Benzie Home Health Care, $29,850 to improve marketing and technical capacity; Botanic Garden Society, $30,000 to support a fund development professional to provide the board with assistance in leadership to develop diversified funding streams; Disability Network, $37,500 to hire an experienced fund developer for a major gifts program; Bethany Christian Services, $25,000 for the Safe Families for Children program; Foundation for Mental Health, $30,000 for a part-time administrative assistant and to increase executive director to full-time; SEEDS, $35,000 to support a development officer and strategic business plan.

“We want to help improve the quality of life in a wide array of programs and services,” Smith said.
