Community Foundation backs new YMCA

TRAVERSE CITY — The new YMCA received $1.4 million from the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation for its recreation facility now under construction on Silver Lake Road.

The foundation’s support for the YMCA that is scheduled to open next spring jumped to nearly $5 million for 2013.

“We feel it’s an important asset for our community and has a lot to offer families in the region,” said Alison Metiva, the foundation’s director of community relations.

The foundation doled out $215,038 to area nonprofits and philanthropic organizations.

Some grant recipients include:

n American Red Cross Northwest Michigan chapter, $6,750, for drowning prevention. The money will be used to implement the Be Water Smart program in the aftermath of a string of drownings in the region this summer.

“With a lot of drownings in the recent past, we know it’s time to stand up and make a difference,” said Kevin Bavers, executive director of the Red Cross. “(The program) primarily targets youth. They are best at getting information into the homes, and they are also the most at risk.”

n Third Level Crisis Intervention Center, $11,500, to support the Pete’s Place Youth Shelter. The shelter is tied to the Goodwill Inn and offers shelter to runaways and homeless youth ages 14 to 18.

“We work with families to get these youth back with their families,” said Ken Homa, executive director of Third Level. “We have about a 95 percent success rate.”

n Women’s Resource Center, $13,660, to support the Doula Teen Parenting program, the Positive Relationships program and support of Sara’s House for Victims of Domestic Violence.

n TART Trails, $5,717, for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and a special Trail Master Plan for Traverse City to Charlevoix.
