TRAVERSE CITY — A semi-truck and van collision at Division and West Front streets tied up traffic for more than an hour Tuesday and sent one man to the hospital, police said.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Traverse City police Capt. Brian Heffner said a southbound van ran a red light on Division and turned left on West Front into the path of a 20,000-pound gravel train truck.
Van driver Samir Muobarak, 32, of Traverse City was uninjured in the crash. A male passenger was extricated from the vehicle by the Traverse City Fire Department and transported to Munson Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Heffner said. Muobarak was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way.
"I stood right up on the brake pedal in the cab," said truck driver Kyle Weber, who was uninjured. "There was no other way to avoid him."
Muobarak had a valid driver's license and alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Heffner said.
Division Street was partially shut down until 2:45 p.m.
