Paxson leads Junior Championship


HARBOR SPRINGS — Cincinnati’s Nicolas Paxson shot a 2-under-par 70 to secure the lead in the boys division after the first round of the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands.

Hailey Hrynewich of Muskegon, Jacqueline Setas of East Lansing, Sarah White of Caledonia and Pader Her of Lansing, all shot a 2-over-par 74 to share the lead in the girls division.

Adam Firavich of Hartland, Dylan Deogun of Orchard Lake, and Daniel Ault of Lansing are all tied for second place, with scores of 1-under-par 71. Nicholas Jan of Northbrook, Ill., Jeremy Ball of Bloomfield Hills, Andrew Sarokin of Novi, Ben VanScoyk of Grand Rapids, Glenn Piot of Canton and Kyle Mueller of Watkinsville, Ga., are tied for fifth place, after shooting an even-par 72.

In the girls division, four players are tied for first place with scores of 2-over-par 74. Her made three birdies in a row on her last nine holes to put her in a tie for the lead. White opened with an eagle and carded four birdies while Hrynewich also had four birdies. Hrynewich had two top-5 finishes in 2012. Setas carded three birdies in the first round.

Second-round tee times will run from 7:30-9:09 a.m. and noon-1:39 p.m. on the Heather Course.
