Leelanau County holds Public Safety Day

GREILICKVILLE — Leelanau County is offering its residents a free chance to see and touch the law enforcement, fire department and emergency response equipment that one day could save their lives.

The annual Public Safety Day and Fire Department Recruitment is today from 7 to 10 p.m. in Greilickville Harbor Park and Marina. Tom Skowronski, emergency management director for Leelanau County, said this is the first year the county will hold the event in Greilickville.

“The purpose of having a public safety day is to bring the public to one location so can observe, touch the equipment available to them during an emergency,” he said.

Skowronski said police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and rescue boats will be on display. Special events include fire extinguisher training, talks about bicycle safety and a “smoke house” that teaches children how to escape a room filled with with smoke.

“Parents can watch on a video screen set up outside,” Skowronski said.

The event is free to the public.
