O’FALLON, Mo — Traverse City’s road woes continued Tuesday night.
River City exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a come-from-behind 8-5 Frontier League win over the Beach Bums, who have now dropped seven road games in a row.
Traverse City took a 5-3 lead into the seventh when it all came apart. The Rascals scored the five runs on three hits, a hit batter and a catcher obstruction call. The big hit was a three-run double by Stephen Malcom off Nick Capito, who had relieved Matt Miller.
The Beach Bums fell to 47-35 with the loss, but remained three games behind Lake Erie in the East Division. The Crushers lost to Normal 4-1. Traverse City still leads the pack in the wild card chase.
The Beach Bums scored three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Ryan Still hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run. Jose Vargas added a two-run homer.
After River City tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third off Jake Sabol, Traverse City regained the edge with two runs in the fifth on solo home runs by Matt Howard and Carlo Testa.
That lead lasted until the seventh.
Sabol went six innings, surrendering three runs on five hits. Miller was tagged for five runs in two-thirds of an inning, three of the runs were unearned.
Traverse City had eight hits, two apiece by Steve Woodward and Howard.
The two teams meet again tonight with Ben Rawding getting the call for the Beach Bums and Drew Benes for River City.
