Deja vu: Crash downs poles, closes stretch of U.S. 31

TRAVERSE CITY — A vehicle struck a utility pole along US 31 North between Three Mile and Four Mile roads, knocked down power lines and caused a road closure. Again.

The Tuesday morning crash was similar to another accident on April 12 that also resulted in downed power lines and closed the same stretch of road.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Capt. Randy Fewless said this time a pickup truck headed east near Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf drove over the curb.

“He goes up onto the shoulder and into the power pole with a transformer,” he said. “Basically the power lines go down and his vehicle goes back into the travel lanes and subsequently hits a vehicle heading westbound.”

Fewless said deputies continued to investigate the crash Tuesday afternoon. The male driver, 57, of Traverse City, sustained injuries and was transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment.

Roger Morgenstern, spokesman for Consumers Energy, said 48 commercial and residential customers between the 1200 and 1800 block of US 31 lost power. He said the utility pole and its transformer sustained enough damage to make the repairs last hours.

“We had to replace the pole; that’s why it’s taking it so long,” he said Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies reopened two lanes of the road at about noon and asked motorists to proceed slowly due to ongoing power line work.
