In regards to grant money from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, it was disturbing to read comments made by Traverse City Commissioner Jeanine Easterday. “If we as a commission had elected not to approve the pass-through grant to Planned Parenthood, that should apply to Father Fred, as well.”
How can Ms. Easterday compare the organization, Planned Parenthood, who provides the most abortion services in our country, to that of the Father Fred organization which provides our local community with food and clothing? I don’t understand the logic Ms. Easterday uses between these two organizations and I find it alarming that she would consider taking away basic needs for people if her contraceptive and abortion rights are not supported.
Good for Commissioner Gillman for speaking up for the dignity of life rather than considering life just a matter of opinion.
I’ve just said goodnight to my 14-year-old son. My thoughts drift to what I will say to him if our nation’s policies don’t change and he is faced with a world short on drinkable water, farm-grown food and habitable space because we didn’t move away from our current dependence on fossil fuels.
I’ve spent many years diagnosing disease. In medical school, I learned the delicate balance upon which life depends. The Earth is a living organism, much like the human body.
Its health depends on numerous delicately balanced systems. If our bodies don’t make insulin, we develop diabetes; if the Earth’s atmosphere has too much carbon dioxide and methane, the planet will develop a life-threatening fever.
There is a solution: renewable energy (see Climate Protection Act and modifications suggested by Citizens Climate Lobby).
My background in science assures me that the correlation between man’s use of fossil fuels and climate change is reality. For the sake of our children, it is time (really past time) to insist our politicians make decisions that ensure a healthy planet. Please, for our collective good, educate yourself and petition policy makers.
