Chapman earns medalist honors at Michigan Amateur

CHARLEVOIX — It was overcast, misty and foggy Tuesday at the Belvedere Golf Club.

One thing was crystal clear, though.

Andrew Chapman was on top of his game.

The 34-year-old Traverse City golfer shot a six-under 63 to earn medalist honors after two rounds of stroke play in the 103rd Michigan Amateur. Chapman finished with a two-day score of 135, which gives the defending champion the No. 1 seed in match play that begins this morning.

The 63 represented Chapman’s lowest tournament round. He finished three shots ahead of Brandon Barrows, Evan Bowser, Jacob Johnson and Max Kollin.

“It was an important round for me today,” he said. “I’ve kind of limped into match play the last few Amateurs. I wanted to have a good one today. It was nice to be able to do that.”

Traverse City’s Patrick Colburn and Winton Munch came in 10 shots back of Chapman at 145. Colburn, 21, shot 75 Tuesday while Munch, who just completed his freshman year at Hope College, fired a 74. They tied for 25th place and qualified for match play. The top 64 advanced.

Heavy rains forced a near three-hour delay in the morning. Some golfers in the field of 156 were still on the course late into the evening.

The downpour forced officials to shorten the par-four 15th hole to a 185-yard par-three because of standing water in the fairway. That made the course a par-69 for the day.

As stroke play medalist, Chapman will receive the Charles Kocsis Trophy. But that’s not the trophy he has his sights set on.

“I’m more focused on keeping the Staghorn Trophy (to the overall winner) in northern Michigan for another year,” he said.

If he plays like he did Tuesday, that’s a real possibility.

Starting on No. 10, Chapman birdied three of the first five holes. He started with a birdie on 10, then rolled in a near 50-foot birdie putt on 12 to quickly go two-under.
