Recent rains delay some area road work

TRAVERSE CITY — Water and the tack coating that bonds old pavement to new road surfaces are a bad mix, said Jim Cook, manager of the Grand Traverse County Road Commission.

That’s why recent rains delayed some road work planned in the Traverse City area at the beginning of the week.

Teams will continue work for the rest of the week, weather permitting. Construction will continue along U.S. 31 between Three and Four Mile Roads now that the skies have cleared.

“Instead of being two lanes going both ways, we closed down just a segment, half a mile or shorter, and closed down west bound lanes and took east bound lanes and made them single two-way traffic,” Cook said.

Work on South Airport Road between Veterans Drive and Cass Road also was delayed because of the rain. Maintenance crews are scheduled to work on the road from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. this week.

“The best thing to do with South Airport is avoid it,” Cook said.

An eastbound lane on East Front Street from the Grandview Parkway to Hope Street is scheduled to be closed through Friday for driveway work.

Construction is expected to continue on the alley south of Seventh Street between Division Street and Oak Street and Union Street from 13th Street to 14th Street.
