Police unable to interview hit-and-run victim

TRAVERSE CITY — A Kalkaska man who was struck and seriously injured by an unknown motorist on Seventh Street has been upgraded to "fair" condition by doctors at Munson Medical Center, but police still haven't been able to question him.

Richard McClellan Jr., 44, was found critically injured and unresponsive in the road on Aug. 7. Traverse City Police Capt. Mike Ayling said McClellan's condition see-sawed over the weekend between "critical" and "serious" and doctors put him in a medically induced coma.

"At this time we can't talk to him," he said.

Munson spokeswoman Meghan Daigh on Wednesday said McClellan's status was upgraded to "fair" condition.

McClellan was checked into Munson Medical Center's emergency department before the incident but walked away from treatment against medical advice, authorities said. Several neighborhood residents heard a collision at the intersection of Seventh and Cedar streets where McClellan was found, but only one saw a vehicle accelerate away from the scene.

Ayling said the witness is "convinced" the vehicle is a newer model white General Motors-brand pickup truck, possibly a 2010 or 2011 model, with four doors or an extended cab. He said detectives received at least six tips a day on the case, as well as additional tips on the July 5 hit-and-run that killed Kelly Ann Boyce, 29, while she rode her bicycle on Washington Street.

"We've been following up on leads," he said of the Boyce case. "Some of them at times appear to be real good — we got a whole bunch of time in one particular tip right now. But ... we certainly don't have any one person that we're looking at yet."

Authorities do not believe the two hit-and-run incidents are connected.

Members of the public with information on either case are asked to contact the Traverse City Police Department at 231-995-5152 or the anonymous tip line at 231-947-TIPS (8477).
