---- — BIG TIMBER, Mont. — Irene M. Malinowski, 86, passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2013, from natural causes, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Irene was born April 3, 1926, to Joe and Emma Komrska, of Traverse City. She was the youngest of four daughters and was raised on an 80-acre farm.
She graduated from Central High School in Traverse City in 1944.
She joined the work force after graduation and worked at the Park Place Hotel in Traverse City as a waitress.
In 1946 she met Henry Malinowski, and after a short courtship they married on April 25, 1946.
They decided to start their life together in Detroit and from this life together had nine children. In 1967 they decided to return to the area where Irene grew up in Northern Michigan. Hank had purchased seven acres when he was discharged from the U.S. Army, and they decided that some day that would be their retirement in Karlin, 20 miles from Traverse City.
Irene rejoined the work force waitressing, then at Munson Hospital in the dietary department. Since this was a distance to travel, she gained employment at Interlochen Arts Academy and worked there for 17 years.
When she retired from her full time job, she loved to travel, and she started traveling with family and friends. In between traveling and being with her children she decided she wanted to try something new. Irene became a senior companion in Traverse City; she would take other seniors to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc., and when other seniors needed to go, Irene drove them. Irene did this for four years.
In 2001 Irene moved to Big Timber, Mont., to be near her daughter, Barbara. Irene had many interests; she loved to play cards, especially Euchre, and she taught many of her grandchildren how to play different card games. Besides traveling and playing cards she crocheted afghans for family and friends, she liked word find puzzles, and she was a reader, oh how she loved to read.
Her most cherished time was with her children and grandchildren, and she was able to spend time with three of her great-great-grandchildren. Oh how she loved babies and small children. Her eyes always lit up when she was around children.
Irene is survived by her children, Barbara (Douglas) Harris, of Big Timber, Mont., step-grandson, Michael Harris, great-grandson, Niclas Harris, great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Harris, of Mountain View, Calif; granddaughter, Lisa (Josh) Adams, great-grandson, Glenn Fair, great-great-grandson, Shawn, great-granddaughter, Brittany (Bryce) Shiver, of Livingston, Mont.; granddaughter, Tiffany (Waide) Satre, and great-grandson, Shadow, of Big Timber, Mont.; Richard (Diane) Malinowski, grandsons, Tony (Amber) Malinowski, great-granddaughters, Allison and Julia; Mark Malinowski, of Livonia, Bernice Malinowski, and grandson, Aaron Watts, of Detroit; Charles Malinowski, granddaughter, Ashley Malinowski, and grandson, Alex Malinowski, of Karlin; granddaughters, Jessica (Mathew) Day, Jamie (Trevor) Beardsly, great-grandson, Andrew, grandson, Christopher Bowman; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Craig and Shelly Smidt and family.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Big Timber, Mont.
