Traverse City corridors could get face-lift

TRAVERSE CITY — Five commercial corridors would have a more urban-, pedestrian- and motorist-friendly look under proposed amendments to Traverse City's master land use plan.

The city planning commission will review the final draft of a 16-month, $96,000 effort to remake the look of five corridors when it meets today at 7 p.m. in the Governmental Center.

The study proposes changes for: West Front Street from the Boardman River to the city limits; East Front Street from Grandview Parkway to Northwestern Michigan College; Garfield Avenue from Front Street south to the city limits; Eighth Street from Union Street to Garfield Avenue, and Fourteenth Street from Cass Street to Division Street.

"The ideas they have for walkability and all modes of transportations through those corridors is a good thing," said Jody Bergman, a city and planning commissioner. "It create a sense of place in those corridors so people will want to come to those areas instead of just driving through."

The plan will have its greatest influence on public infrastructure if adopted, said Russ Soyring, city planning director.

The study recommends a traffic roundabout at the Garfield and Eighth street intersection, and turning the intersection of Grandview Parkway and East Front Street from its Y configuration into a T intersection. It also proposes reducing some four lane streets to three lanes.

"Probably the boldest proposal is to Garfield Avenue, to turn it into a three-lane road with bike lanes and complete sidewalks," Soyring said.

The plan can be viewed on the city's web site at http://www.ci.traverse-city.mi.us/.
