Public money sought for credit union project

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse Bay Area Credit Union will seek over $2.2 million in taxpayer support to clean up and turn a contaminated gas station site into its new headquarters.

Credit union officials asked the Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to apply for a $1 million loan from the state to match $1.2 million to be spent on site remediation and protecting the new building's basement from gas infiltration.

The brownfield authority would repay both the state and credit union by capturing property taxes generated by the $7 million redevelopment on the corner of Front and Hope streets.

The authority will review the credit union's application for assistance today when it meets at 8 a.m. in the Governmental Center.
