Prep Basketball Roundup: St. Mary beats Joburg

GAYLORD — Gaylord St. Mary pulled into a virtual tie atop the Ski Valley Conference with a 57-39 girls basketball victory Tuesday over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

St. Mary led 23-13 at halftime en route to handing Joburg its first loss of the season.

Kari Borowiak led the Snowbirds (11-2, 8-1 SVC) with 20 points, while Christina Smith added 12 and Mary Spyhalski 11.

Abby Schlicher paced Joburg (12-1, 9-1 SVC) with 13 points and Brittany Cherwinski pitched in 11.

St. Mary travels Thursday to Onaway.


McBain      49 Beal City      45

McBain took over sole possession of second place in the Highland standings with a come-from-behind 49-45 victory over visiting Beal City.

The Ramblers (6-4, 5-1) now have the chance to forge a first-place tie on Friday in their rematch at home with front-runner Pine River.

Sophomore Meredith Hamlet scored 23 points, including 18 in the second half, and she went 8-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter as the Ramblers rallied from a 23-16 halftime deficit.

Junior center Katelyn Loeks scored eight, all in the second half, and pulled down two key rebounds in the final 30 seconds. Freshman Asia LaGrow grabbed six boards and junior guard Kara Hughston had eight rebounds and played suffocating defense.

Juniors Melanie Schafer (18) and Addie Schumacher (16) paced the Aggies (6-5, 4-2).

McBain NMC      55 Evart      32

Northern Michigan Christian (8-4, 4-3 Highland) surged to a 20-8 halftime lead en route to a 55-32 decision over visiting Evart.

Freshman forward Sarah Pluger plunked in a game-high 15 points with nine boards for the Comets. Junior guard Brittany Hoekwater hit for 14 and junior forward Sydney Dick struck for nine points with 10 rebounds. Hoekwater and Adri Sigafoose each had four assists and NMC had 14 steals as a team.

"We sat in their passing lanes and were pretty opportunistic defensively," said NMC coach Casey Sigafoose.

Sage Nabozny scored 11 to pace the Wildcats.


Suttons Bay      54 Lake Leelanau SM      35

Suttons Bay picked up a 54-35 non-conference win over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

The Norsemen had 18 points from Logan Mikesell while Aaron Orban scored 16 points.

The Eagles had 15 points from Drew Pobuda while Brandon McSawby had 10 points.
