2 TC natives earn all-star selections
SAULT STE. MARIE — Two Traverse City natives have been selected to the North American Hockey League's Top Prospects Tournament.
The Feb. 18-20 event in Troy will feature former TC Central forward Jared Van Wormer and former TC West forward Eric Rivard, both playing for the Great Lakes entry in the tournament.
Former TC North Stars players Sean Murphy (Soo Eagles) and Taylor Burden (Kalamazoo Wings) were also chosen, with Murphy on the Great Lakes team and Burden on the Midwest squad.
Both Van Wormer and Rivard play for the Soo Eagles.
TC's Halverson joins Greyhounds
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ontario — Traverse City native Brandon Halverson has been called up by the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for this weekend's games.
Halverson is currently splitting time in net with former TC West netminder Michael Tilford with the Oakland Grizzlies AAA Midget team, where he has a 3.25 goals-against average and .894 save percentage.
Halverson won't play or dress for this weekend's game, but will practice with the team and be in attendance at both contests this weekend. The Greyhounds selected him in the seventh round of last year's OHL draft.
The Greyhounds — who are 6-3-0-1 in their last 10 games — host Windsor at 7:07 p.m. Friday and Oshawa at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
TC's Kattelus earns AHL promotion
CHICAGO — Traverse City native Eric Kattelus has generated five shots on goal in his first five contests since being signed by the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves.
Kattelus was the Kalamazoo Wings' scoring co-leader with 13 goals and led the team with 32 points in 34 games during his third professional campaign. His 32 points had already matched his point output in 68 contests with the K-Wings last year.
The 25-year-old left wing also played for the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones after four years at Michigan Tech.
Challenge match met for trail plan
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails, Inc. recently announced that the Traverse City Track Club's $25,000 challenge match for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail was met.
More than 120 donors contributed to reach the match by the end of December, which secured an additional $5,000 bonus from the Track Club. The challenge match spurred the support needed to begin constructing the next four-mile segment from the Dune Climb to Empire in 2013.
