GirlTECH career seminar held today

TRAVERSE CITY — Area girls are invited to a GirlTECH seminar where they’ll hear women talk about working in non-traditional careers, ranging from a Michigan State Police trooper to a boat captain.

Today’s seminar is expected to draw more than 200 10th grade girls in the Grand Traverse area.

GirlTECH was developed to encourage high school girls to consider non-traditional careers, in which women comprise 25 percent or less of the workforce.

Conference speakers include Maxine Lauer, trending expert/chief executive officer; Sandy Coobac, a pilot for FedEx Express; Mary Ann Schallip, captain for Soo Locks Boat Tours; Cristin Hosmer, winemaker at Bel Lago; Roberta Wagner, manufacturing engineer; Andrea Maio, film production; Liz Ascione, engineer & entrepreneur; Shelley Izzard, Michigan State Police trooper; and Emily Shaw, water studies.

The group welcome begins at 9 a.m. with smaller group sessions held between 9:30 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. It will be held at the Hagerty Center on Northwestern Michigan College Great Lakes Campus.
