Families are asked to donate ... to the UnderPantry

TRAVERSE CITY — To mark Family Volunteer Day on Nov. 23, area families are being asked to donate items that might make their kids squirm — new bras, underwear and undershirts for an UnderPantry drive.

The undergarments are needed to help out homeless families and guests staying at the Goodwill Inn, said Volunteer Center Youth and Family Coordinator Amanda Hilt.

“We just thought it was fun,” Hilt said. “It’s a clever name, and this needs community awareness. Undergarments are always lacking at Goodwill Inn, and they need to be brand new. People don’t tend to think about that. They think of clothes, and they never think of undergarments.”

Donations can be dropped off at United Way of Northwest Michigan, the Park Place Hotel, Grace Episcopal Church and all of the local Goodwill Retail locations between Nov. 23 and Dec. 13.

Families can also volunteer at participating area agencies. For more information, please call 231-947-3200 or email info@unitedwaynwmi.org.
