Dogs' fate in hands of prosecutor

---- — NORTHPORT — Two dogs may be euthanized after what Leelanau County’s sheriff termed a “very, very vicious attack” on a Northport woman.

The victim, 47, was walking down North Overlook Road in Leelanau Township on the morning of Oct. 17 when two dogs ran away from their owner and bit her multiple times on her arm and leg. A motorist called 911 and the dogs’ owner, Jane A. Weaver, 61, took them back into her house.

Sheriff Mike Borkovich said the dogs are quarantined inside Weaver’s home until Oct. 28 to make sure they are not rabid. He said the Leelanau County prosecutor’s office likely will hold a hearing this week to decide whether the dogs will be destroyed.

“It was a very, very vicious attack,” Borkovich said. “It has to be handled differently than a normal dog bite.”

The victim was treated for multiple bites. The dogs were a mixed, shepherd-type breed and an Australian Shepherd-type breed, Borkovich said.

Weaver told authorities one dog previously bit someone else. She received a citation for having dogs that bit a pedestrian on a public street.
