Titans head into volleyball showdown vs. Cadillac

CADILLAC — Today’s the day.

At the end of the night, Traverse City West either retains its Big North Conference volleyball stranglehold on first place or shares the top spot with Cadillac.

“That should be a showdown,” said Titans star Katie Placek, who two weeks ago became only the second West player with 1,000 career kills. “That should be exciting. (Against Cadillac last time) we had great energy level and everyone did their job. When everything’s clicked in, good things happen.”

The Vikings swept Petoskey, 25-10, 25-19, 25-17 last Wednesday to set up the showdown for first place.

Cadillac enters the match with a 30-4-1 mark overall and 8-1 in BNC play. West is 29-8-1 and 8-0.

“Cadillac gets everything back,” Titans coach Emily Baumann said. “I don’t know how. They just get everything back. They get a finger or something on it and get it back. So we have to be ready for everything.”

Baumann, meanwhile, is getting extremely close to her Oct. 21 due date. That would put her on schedule to deliver her second daughter the same day the Titans host Petoskey for the team’s Dig Pink match.

“I’m hoping I go a little bit early so I can be back for districts,” Baumann said. “That’s kind of my plan. I don’t know if the baby will agree with me, but that’s my plan.”

After the Alpena match, West travels to Petoskey on Oct. 23 and hosts Gaylord Oct. 30 to close out the conference slate. The Titans have already defeated each of those teams once this season.
