Forum: Work at Front, Cass will help TC thrive

We would like to take a moment to give our downtown Traverse City neighbors some details of the construction project on the corner of Front and Cass Streets.

The traffic cones recently went up on Cass Street south of Front. The half block of Cass Street just south of Front is going to be one lane each way for a while. The alley south of Front between Union and Cass Streets is going to be impacted as well.

In co-operation with the city Engineering Department, we will be replacing the sidewalks and curbs around the new construction, resurfacing and slightly raising (an inch or so) the westernmost lane of Cass from Front to the alley and replacing the whole width of the alley between our project and the building that houses Fou Fou.

If all goes as planned we will be performing demolition, excavating, pouring foundations, setting steel girders and putting up the exterior of the building before the snow falls. All of this is going to require heavy equipment and some room to work.

We purposefully waited until October to start this construction project so as to minimize the impact on our neighbors and the City in general. By doing so we put ourselves under an extremely tight timeline to be done with the building by May of next year.

We understand that this project may come as a surprise to some, but we have been in front of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Historic District Commission and The City Commission. The project has been reported on by most local news outlets.

As city residents we, along with everyone else, want the project to be completed quickly and with as little mess as possible. We understand that constructing a building on the busiest corner in downtown TC is going to create inconvenience for others and we want to apologize for this in advance.
