Twin Lakes deeds restrict county's options

TRAVERSE CITY — Twin Lakes Park will remain a Grand Traverse County facility, unless the heirs of the families who gave the property to the county say otherwise.

County attorneys recently completed an analysis of four deeds that outline the county’s ownership of the park located in Long Lake Township.

County Parks and Recreation officials’ interest in trying to lease the facility to a private nonprofit group prompted the review.

Christopher Forsyth, the county’s deputy civil counsel, said deeds stipulate the land must be used as a county park, or for “recreation uses.”

Forsyth said other options might be available to the county if county officials reach out to the heirs of the Gilbert and Lautner families -- who gifted different pieces of the park to the public in the 1940s and 1960s -- as well as Chazz McCall, a property owner who lives adjacent to the park.
