Schuba wins 3-point contest

TRAVERSE CITY — Travis Schuba, a record-setting 3-point shooter at Madonna, put his skills on the line in a national contest Saturday — and won.

The Kalkaska graduate captured the inaugural NABC-NAIA men’s basketball 3-point contest in Kansas City. The event was staged in conjunction with the NAIA Division I men’s national championship.

Schuba edged Xavier Roberson of Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 21-18 in the finals.

“It’s kind of cool to be the first one to win it,” Schuba said.

Four players from across the nation were selected to compete. Schuba — who holds Madonna’s 3-point records for game (11), season (130) and career (399) — was joined by Roberson, Danny Rudeen of Morningside (Iowa) and Talib Uqdah of Arizona Christian.

All four players were given 60 seconds to attempt as many 3-point shots as possible using five balls from five racks. The two players with the highest score advanced to the finals.

“The first four balls on the rack were worth a point,” Schuba said. “The last one, called the money ball, was worth two points. Plus, there was one full rack of money balls that you could put at any of the five spots.”

The racks were placed in each corner, on each wing and at the top of the circle.

Schuba, who went second in the opening round, finished with 21 points. Roberson, who went fourth, won the round with 22. Rudeen was third with 20, Uqdah took fourth with 17.

Roberson had the option in the championship round and elected to let Schuba shoot first.

“I was OK with that,” Schuba said. “I figured it would be good to go first and put a little more pressure on him — put a number up there that he knew he had to beat. It worked.”

Schuba, who will compete in the Champions of Character College All-Star Game tonight at Davenport University, received the red carpet treatment in Kansas City.
