TRAVERSE CITY -- A Traverse City police officer received minor injuries after a man drove his truck head-on into a police vehicle.
The officer, Tim Smith, attempted to stop the driver Tuesday at about 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Seventh and Maple streets after it was reported the driver was erratically operating the vehicle, according to a city police press release.
The driver stopped briefly before he accelerated rapidly and collided with the police car. Smith was treated at Munson Medical Center for minor back and neck injuries and released, Police Capt. Mike Ayling said.
The driver of the truck, 36, of Traverse City, is still at Munson Medical Center for evaluation, though Ayling said he does not believe the man is there because of any injury sustained in the accident.
There was a police dog in the car at the time of the accident that was not injured. The police vehicle sustained “pretty good damage,” Ayling said.
