Prep Sports Roundup: West girls, Petoskey boys win BNC meet

THOMPSONVILLE — It was nearly as good as it gets in the girls slalom for Traverse City West.

The Titans took the top three spots overall and had all four counters in the top five in a dominant day of racing at the TC West Invitational at Crystal Mountain.

West also took first in the giant slalom, where it edged Traverse City Central and cruised to a first-place finish overall on the girls side (37-59.5).

Petoskey’s boys edged past Central for first overall, winning the giant slalom behind the one-two punch of Garret and Gunnar Lundteigen, then putting together a good enough showing in the slalom to win the boys side despite finishing second to the Trojans in the slalom.

For the West girls, Morgan Culp was the overall winner in the slalom (59.01), just ahead of teammates Claire Podges (1:00.88) and Ginevra Gabrielli (1:01.77). If not for Cadillac’s Marissa Vanalst (1:02) finishing in front of West’s Kitt Hornbogen (1:02.9), the Titans would have completed the clean sweep of the top four spots.

“There’s a good battle going on between the West and Central girls teams,” said West coach Ed Johnson. “But we came out on top. It was good because we were on our home hill. We had a good, strong slalom finish.”

Culp added a fourth-place finish in giant slalom (42.2), Gabrielli was fifth (42.91), Devan Gorton was sixth (43.64) and Hornbogen placed 11th (44.36).

Central was led in the slalom by Molly Whiting, who was sixth (1:02.96). Devon Dotterrer was seventh (1:03.08), Maggie Dutmers was eighth (1:03.16) and Katy Zimmerman took 10th (1:04.09).

Lili Lockwood won the giant slalom for the Trojans (41.57), followed by Whiting (7th, 43.97), Dotterrer (8th, 44.17) and Baily Versluis (12th, 44.63).

“We have no excuses. The girls skied pretty good,” said Central coach Jerry Stanek. “West, right now, is far and away the best team in the state. We’re just trying to keep up with them. We’re young so I’m pleased with where the girls are at.”
