Michigan pickers set up shop

TRAVERSE CITY — A couple who earned a reputation in the Grand Traverse region for culling antiques and trinkets from old barns and estate sales opened a retail store in East Jordan.

Marcia and Patrick Gibbard said they travel all across northern Michigan in search of bargains, and spend much of their time in the Grand Traverse region. That passion led them to open Picker’s Exchange at 507 Water St. in East Jordan, where they’ll retail all their picks.

“We have had a lot of people come from Traverse City looking for bargains,” said Marcia Gibbard. “It’s all by word of mouth.”

The couple’s business retailed for years a variety of antiques, trinkets and novel items online. The new retail location is set up like a mini-antique mall that offers sell and trade options, as well as vendor space for other antique dealers. More than 20 vendors are represented in the business space, open Tuesday to Saturday.

“We try to make it convenient for everybody,” Marcia Gibbard said. “We’ll even do layaway.”

The Gibbards live the lifestyle of bargain hunters made famous by the national television show American Pickers, which follows expert antique dealers on the hunt for good deals.

“It’s kind of the same thing but we don’t have a camera crew following us,” Marcia Gibbard said.
