EMPIRE — A dead dog in the back of a pickup truck that a concerned citizen reported to the Leelanau County sheriff’s department turned out to be another type of four-legged animal.
Sheriff’s deputies investigated the call on Saturday and found the canine in question was in fact a dead coyote. The caller believed the animal in the back of a parked truck in Empire to be a dead German shepherd or even a wolf.
Sheriff Mike Borkovich said Michigan residents with proper licenses may hunt or trap coyotes throughout the year except between April 15 and July 15.
Authorities don’t know how the coyote in Empire died. Dead coyotes aren’t illegal to possess.
