TEDx speaker match

TRAVERSE CITY — The Utopia Foundation has announced its third annual TEDxTraverseCity speaker match, an initiative that offers a dollar for dollar match of up to $1,000 for TEDxTraverseCity speakers’ favorite charities. Ten charities or non-profits will receive matching grants. Donations can be made at The match runs for up to 60 days, beginning after this evening’s TEDxTraverse City event, through July 14.

The organizations chosen include The Sage Mentorship Program, Challenge Detroit, Econ4, The Clariden School of South Lake, RESULTS-The Power To End Poverty, Fonkoze Microfinance in Haiti, Green Bronx Machine, Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation, Nyaka AIDS Orphan Project and Early Childhood Development Center in Katmandu, Nepal.


Evaluation planning

TRAVERSE CITY — NorthSky Nonprofit Network will sponsor a professional development session for nonprofit organizations, “Developing an Evaluation Plan,” from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Northwestern Michigan College University Center campus. The session will be led by Freya Bradford, NorthSky consultant and evaluation project manager, and will cover how to get started with evaluation planning.

The workshop fee is $12. Participants are invited to bring a lunch. Registration is required by contacting or by calling 929-3934.


Employment forecast

LANSING — The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget has released a forecast that indicates summer jobs for teens will be competitive this year.

This summer, approximately 242,800 teens are projected to be in the Michigan workforce, with approximately 180,900 getting jobs. That’s a slight improvement over last year, though the number of unemployed teens is expected to total about 61,900.


Resale shop opening

TRAVERSE CITY — Plato’s Closet is opening Thursday, May 16, at 1525 South Division St.

Plato’s Closet is a resale retail shop that buys and sells gently used, brand-name clothing and accessories for teens and 20-somethings. The store provides cash on the spot for merchandise purchased from consumers and sell clothing and accessories for up to 70 percent off retail prices.
