INTERLOCHEN — The organ studio of Thomas Bara will give a Chapel Organ Recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall at Interlochen Center for the Art, M-137. The event is free and open to the public.

Writers potluck

TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan Writers’ potluck, originally scheduled for April 11, has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 9. The public is invited.

The event will start with dinner at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, 6726 Center Road. An open mic reading will follow. Attendees should bring a dish to pass. For details, call Betsy Emdin, 492-3260.

Library Friends

KINGSLEY — The Kingsley Friends of the Library will hold their annual meeting Saturday, May 11, at the library, 213 S. Brownson.

The meeting opens with a free continental breakfast and social time at 9:30 a.m., a review of 2012 and member input at 10 a.m., and a program titled “Secrets of Book Publishing: Down and Dirty” by Susan Bays of Arbutus Press at 10:30 a.m.

The public is welcome. Registration is required and may be done at the library or by calling 263-5484.

Dance concerts

TRAVERSE CITY — The Dance Center will hold its annual concert series Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12, in Traverse City, and Saturday, May 18, in Kalkaska.

Dance Center students ages 6 and older will present the Ovation Concert at 1 and 6 p.m. May 11, and the Encore Concert at 1 and 6 p.m. May 12, both in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center. Young children’s concerts at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, will feature performances by preschool and kindergarten students.

Tickets for the Ovation and Encore concerts are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets for the young children’s concerts are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They are available by calling the Dance Center, 947-6820.

Dance Center students in the Kalkaska studio programs will perform at 1 and 6 p.m. May 18 in the Kalkaska High School auditorium. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. They may be purchased at the Dance Center’s studio in the Kaliseum or by calling 947-6820.

Senior shimmy

TRAVERSE CITY — Crystal Bindi Studios and the Grand Traverse County Senior Center Network will offer “Senior Shimmy,” a new, non-impact, weight-bearing exercise class.

The class is based on the gentle movements of belly dance and will meet at 2 p.m. for 10 Mondays, starting May 13, at Crystal Bindi Studios at Logan’s Landing. The cost is $20 for the series or $3 for drop-ins. For details or to register, call the Senior Center Network, 922-4911, or email

HBA offers classes

TRAVERSE CITY — The Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area will offer two classes in May of interest to housing industry professionals.

From 7:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, a MIOSHA-CET representative will provide an overview of the new fall protection requirements. An American Heart Association First Aid Certificate class will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 23. For details, call the HBA office, 946-2305.

SUTTONS BAY — The next meeting of Leelanau Clean Water is at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Leelanau County Government Center, 8527 E. Government Center Dr. The public is welcome.

Driver safety class

TRAVERSE CITY — The AARP Driver Safety Program, a classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older, will meet 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 16-17, at the Commission on Aging, 520 W. Front St.

Drivers must attend both classes to receive a certificate. The fee is $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members. Reservations are required; call 922-4688 or (877) 686-4688. A class also will be offered June 13-14.
