Cooler temperatures will continue today

TRAVERSE CITY — Chris McCreedy was scaling the dune climb at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with girlfriend Claire Skinner on Monday evening when the couple noticed some ominous storm clouds rolling in.

“It got darker and darker — it was beautiful,” McCreedy said. “We were like, ‘Wow, we kind of need to get moving here.’”

The Ann Arbor couple’s attention was quickly drawn to an apparent funnel cloud that formed over Lake Michigan. McCreedy snapped a photo while 20 others watched the tail reach down from the clouds.

“I’m guessing it was over the lake — I think it was a water spout,” McCreedy said.

The water spout was actually one of two spotted Monday evening in northern Michigan. A second was spotted on the other side of the state, near Alpena on Lake Huron, in the community of Black River. The funnel clouds were the product of a storm and weather system that quickly moved through the area, bringing strong storms and continuing cool temperatures that are well below normal for August.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Brian Adam said those cool temperatures will continue Wednesday with a high of 68 degrees.

Tuesday afternoon’s high struggled to rise above 65 degrees, which was nearly 15 degrees below normal for Aug. 13. The temperatures felt even cooler in Traverse City with a stiff wind rolling in off Grand Traverse Bay.

“In a nutshell we are basically ... in a pocket of cool air and we’ve gotten locked into the cool side of things,” Adam said. “By Friday and Saturday it should get closer to normal with highs in the mid- to upper-70s.”
