Video: Police release Estes arrest footage

TRAVERSE CITY — City police released patrol car camera footage today that shows Mayor Michael Estes' drunken driving arrest.

Estes, 63, is out of frame performing field sobriety tests for most of the 9-minute video and only appears when the officer escorts him to a patrol car.

The Record-Eagle filed a Freedom of Information Act request for footage of Estes' Oct. 23 arrest. Police said a camera on the arresting officer's vehicle was turned off beforehand because of a technical issue and a password was needed to access secondary footage from a backup patrol car.

Traverse City Police Capt. Mike Ayling said the backup officer knew the primary vehicle's camera was turned off and attempted to position his car in order to capture footage, but was unsuccessful in recording the images of Estes's field sobriety test.
