Recalled ingredient prompts Kilwins to act

PETOSKEY — Kilwins Quality Confections of Petoskey is recalling certain 7-ounce packages of sugar-free peanut butter fudge because one of the ingredients is the subject of another recall and could be contaminated with salmonella, according to a Food and Drug Administration announcement.

Some peanut butter used to make the fudge is associated with a Sunland, Inc., of Portales, N.M., recall of all products manufactured in Sunland’s peanut butter plant because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the product, FDA reports.

The recalled packages were sold in Kilwins retail stores in Michigan, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Consumers are urged to return the recalled product to place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can call Jean Hammond at 231-758-3903 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
