Patrick J. O'Brien

LAKE LEELANAU — Patrick James O'Brien, 82, of Lake Leelanau, passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Munson Medical Center.

Pat was born on Aug. 20, 1930 in Lake Leelanau to Earl J. and Hilda M. (Priest) O'Brien.

Pat was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary's High School and Miami Dade Community College. He proudly served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. Pat was stationed all over the U.S. and Alaska as a radio technician and instructor. He was also stationed in Labrador; Samsun, Turkey; Taipei, Taiwan and U-Tapao, Thailand. After his retirement from the USAF, Pat worked for the U.S. Postal Service and in 1985 he moved back to Lake Leelanau to build his retirement home and gentleman's farm on family land.

Pat truly loved his family. He was a very generous man not only financially, but also with his advice (whether you wanted it or not) and sharing the fruits of a days work from the farm. This was his lifelong way of showing his love. Pat's love was also extended to his devotion to his Catholic faith.

Pat is survived by his former wife Betsy (Overby) Houdek; sons, Michael (Beth), Carl (Monica), and Patrick (Pennie) O'Brien; daughter, Brenda (Jerry) Korb; brothers, Harold (Helen), Arthur (Judy), and Dennis (Jane) O'Brien; sisters, Doris Peplinski, Joan (Louis) Herman, and Ann O'Brien; sister-in-laws, Arlene, Kay and Gail; grandchildren, Holly, Timothy, Tiffany, Corey, Cody, Mitchell, Lucas, Sean, Joshua, Shea, Kaitlyn, Sara and Madilyn; one great grandchild, Logan; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Bernard, Louis, Marvin, James and Glen O'Brien and infant brother, Francis.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m, on Friday, Feb. 15 with the Rosary/Wake service at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau with a visitation held one hour prior. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's School, P.O. Box 340, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653.
