Lions hire Xanders as senior personnel executive

ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions have attempted to improve their front office by hiring senior personnel executive Brian Xanders.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says he's thrilled to have a person with Xanders' experience working within the organization.

The Lions announced the move Monday.

Xanders was general manager of the Denver Broncos before parting ways with one year left on his contract following a meeting in May 2012 with executive vice president John Elway. He didn't have final say on roster decisions in Denver, and he won't in Detroit.

Xanders was hired by the Broncos as assistant GM under coach Mike Shanahan in 2008 and was promoted to general manager a year later.

He spent his first 14 seasons in the NFL in various capacities with the Atlanta Falcons.

Beach Bums ink speedy infielder-outfielder Woodward

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums signed infielder/outfielder Scott Woodward.

Woodward, who played at Coastal Carolina University, was originally picked in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB draft by the Oakland A's, but opted to return to school for his senior year. In his final season, the left-handed hitter hit .342 with four homers, 37 RBI and 31 steals. He also walked 35 times and was hit by 22 pitches, leading to a .480 on-base percentage. He was drafted in the seventh round the following year by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

During his collegiate career, Woodward hit .333 with a .486 OBP. He stole 158 bases in 182 attempts. He finished in the top 10 of the NCAA stolen base leaders in three of four seasons with the Chanticleers.

He most recently played in 2011 for the Ogden Raptors, where in 36 games he scored 25 runs with a .219 batting average, four homers and 12 RBIs.

The Beach Bums home opener is Tuesday, May 21 against the Evansville Otters.
