---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Police arrested a 16-year-old Traverse City girl on an operating while intoxicated charge after observing her drive erratically on Garfield Avenue.
The traffic stop was made Sunday at 2:40 a.m. A preliminary breath test found her blood-alcohol content to be .12 percent and she was arrested by Traverse City Police.
Capt. Brian Heffner said it was unusual to find a juvenile to have such a high blood-alcohol level and driving. He said the jail booking area had to be cleared of adult inmates while she was given a second Breathalyzer. Federal law prohibits officers from exposing juveniles in custody to adult inmates.
All three of the juvenile's passengers — a male, 19, and two females, 18 and 19 — had also been drinking and registered .137, .192 and .04 blood alcohol contents. Heffner said they were driven home by a parent after being issued minor in possession citations.
The juvenile was turned over to her father with a summons and an upcoming hearing in juvenile court.
