Police: Drunken driver parked in stranger's driveway, fell asleep

SUTTONS BAY — A suspected drunken driver was arrested after he pulled into a stranger’s driveway in Elmwood Township and fell asleep behind the wheel.

Authorities say a caller reported a man passed out in a running car in their South West Bay Shore Drive home’s driveway. Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 5:52 a.m. and woke a Traverse City man, 32.

The man showed signs of intoxication. He did not know the time or why he was parked in a stranger’s driveway. He could not explain fresh damage to the passenger side of his vehicle, including a flat tire. The suspect told deputies he was at a Suttons Bay bar earlier in the evening.

A portable breath test found his blood alcohol content was .16 percent at 7:13 a.m.

Lt. Clint Kerr said the suspect will be arraigned Friday on an operating while intoxicated charge.
