Gladhander valet ticketed

Police say teen struck couple with vehicle at charity event

TRAVERSE CITY — Police ticketed a local teen after he struck a couple with a vehicle while he served as a valet at local charity event.

Police said James Robert Bradley, 18, was working as a valet at the Gladhander charity function at St. Francis High School on Saturday night. The event has raised millions of dollars for Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools over its 30-year run.

The incident happened at the intersection of 11th and Cass streets shortly before 6 p.m. Police said Bradley was driving east on 11th Street and stopped at Cass. Brian and Sharon Burke, 45 and 50 respectively, were walking west across the Cass from the northeast corner of the intersection.

Bradley hit the couple as he turned north onto Cass Street. He told police he didn't see them.

The Burkes were taken to Munson Medical Center with hip, shoulder and head injuries, none of which were life-threatening. They were treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Bradley was ticketed for failing to yield to pedestrians.

GTACS Superintendent Mike Buell said Bradley is a GTACS student, but wouldn't provide further details.

He's glad the Burkes weren't seriously injured, and said students have served as valets at the Gladhander for years without incident.

"You don't want it to take away from all the good the kids have done over the years," he said.

Bradley has no prior violations on his driving record, a Michigan Secretary of State spokeswoman said.
