‘Gasland II’

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College student groups Grand Traverse Mycological Society and Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood will sponsor a screening of the documentary “Gasland II.”

The film focuses on how fracking affects Michigan residents. It will be shown at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in room 217 of Scholars Hall on Northwestern Michigan College’s main campus. A panel discussion will follow.

‘Build and Sail’

SUTTONS BAY — Inland Seas Education Association is offering eight scholarships to 10 to 16 year old students for its “Build and Sail” program. Students will build two Optimist Pram sailboats and then earn a scholarship to Traverse Area Community Sailing to learn how to sail the boats they build.

Only the first eight students who register and attend a mandatory orientation class from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 25, at the ISEA Boat Shop will receive scholarships. The free boat-building class will be held from 10 a.m.-noon nine Saturdays starting Feb. 1 at the boat shop. For details or to register, call 271-3077.

Community meal

KINGSLEY — The second annual Kingsley Community Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Kingsley Baptist Church, 7511 Blackman Road.

The free meal will be served from 4:30-7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. The menu features vegetarian or meat lasagna or turkey. Carry-out meals are available and must be ordered by Friday, Jan. 24. Volunteers also are needed.

GT Dems rally

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Democratic Party will host its 2014 campaign kick-off Winter Rally on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The rally will be held from 6-8 p.m. at InsideOut Gallery, 229 Garland St., with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. A $10 donation is suggested.
