Possible bomb a false alarm

TRAVERSE CITY — A “suspicious device” that brought a state police bomb squad unit to a fruit processor’s facility in Grawn turned out to be no bomb at all.

Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of the device at Cherry Growers Inc.’s U.S. 31 south location on Dec. 2. They received help from the Michigan State Police bomb squad, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Traverse City police, but the various law enforcement agencies were responding to a false alarm.

Sheriff’s Lt. Bryan Marrow said the device turned out to be “an article that was fashioned to look like an explosive device.”

Marrow said the incident remains under investigation. He said the case eventually will be forwarded to Grand Traverse County prosecutors to determine if a crime occurred.
