Constant snow = slick roads

TRAVERSE CITY — The new week didn’t begin quietly in Kalkaska County, what with a new round of wintry weather.

A car veered over the yellow line at the intersection of Rapid City Road and Amidon Road Monday morning and struck a Kalkaska County plow truck.

A woman who drove the car was taken to the hospital, said county Sheriff Dave Israel, who said she suffered leg injuries.

The plow was damaged, as well, and had to be taken off the road before it could complete its route.

“Basically, what’s going to suffer from this are other people’s secondary roads,” said Kalkaska County Road Commission Manager John Rogers.

The county assigns 10 trucks to as many routes, and the other trucks had to pick up the slack for the damaged vehicle.

Plow trucks across the Grand Traverse area will be busy all week, with lake effect snow falling on and off throughout.

“We will be dealing with several bouts of lake effect snow with cold arctic air masses coming over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes,” Nick Schwartz, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said. “Through (today) we’re going to be dealing with a weak low pressure system which will skirt through area and ramp up the lake effect snow machine.”

Schwartz warned of snowfall between one to three inches for every 12-hour period over the next few days.

The wind chill temperature will reach dangerous levels, making it feel like near-zero temperatures, especially at night.

“(The roads) are going to be snow covered and slippery once we get through (today) and into Wednesday and Thursday,” said Schwartz. “The salt on the roads doesn’t work as effectively with these types of colder temperatures.”

Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich warned area residents to be careful while driving and walking on driveways. He recommended people keep a bag of dirt or kitty litter in their vehicle in case they get stuck, and to leave plenty of room between them and vehicles they trail.
