TC Track Club offers challenge match

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Track Club has issued a $25,000 challenge match for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail.

The trail campaign has a goal to raise $200,000 in order to begin constructing the next four-mile segment from the Dune Climb to Empire. There will be a bonus of $5,000 if the goal is met before Dec. 31.

Karen Wells, the track club board president, said "we value the phenomenal trail systems we have in our five county region, and the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will further enhance recreation for locals and visitors to our community."

Cyclo-cross races Sunday at Civic Center

TRAVERSE CITY — Einstein Cycles will host the second annual Civic Center Cross at noon on Sunday at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.

This will be the third of four races in the Cross the Bay cyclo-cross series promoted by Einstein Cycles in collaboration with North Country Cycle Sport of Petoskey.

Jason Lowetz, owner of Einstein Cycle, said the "great thing about local level cyclo-cross races is that anything goes. You can race on a mountain bike, road bike with knobby tires, a cyclo-­cross bike or a fat tire bike."

Riders of all ability levels are welcome. The racing starts at noon with the novice riders, followed by a free kid's race at 12:30 p.m. The intermediate level riders start at 1 p.m., the expert at 2 p.m.

Otwell helps MSU qualify for nationals

EAST LANSING — Traverse City Central's Julia Otwell finished 17th overall as Michigan State took second in the Great Lakes regional to qualify for the national cross country championships.

Otwell was the third Spartan finisher in a season-best 20:49. She earned all-region honors.

Michigan won the regional with 41 points. Michigan State had 77.
