SF's Wilson a Heisman winner

TRAVERSE CITY — St. Francis' Dan Wilson was announced Monday as one of 12 Michigan winner for the Wendy's High School Heisman.

Wilson was chosen from 45,000 applicants, surviving rounds that narrowed contenders to one male and one female winner from each school, and then to Michigan's group of 20 state finalists.

Wilson will compete against winners from other regions across the country for a chance to be named one of 12 national finalists, who will be featured during a televised ceremony on ESPN networks, and receive gold medals and $2,000 awards for their high schools. One male and one female national winner will each receive a crystal High School Heisman trophy, a $500 gift card, and $10,000 gift to their high school.

Wilson was part of St. Francis' No. 1 doubles tennis flight — along with Tanner Hobbs — that advanced to the Division 4 state quarterfinals. He also plays lacrosse for the TC Crusaders.

Macdonell earns academic honor

KALAMAZOO — Traverse City native and Kalamazoo College goalkeeper Dane Macdonell was selected to the 2012 Academic All-District 6 Men's Soccer team.

Macdonell now advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. District 6 includes Division III schools in states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Macdonell is the lone goalkeeper on the team.

A senior from Traverse City, Macdonell carries a 3.92 cumulative GPA as an economics major. Entering Thursday's MIAA semifinal contest, Macdonell had a 1.53 goals against average with five shutouts in 15 games played.

Macdonell has posted GAAs of 1.29 and 1.20 the previous two seasons for the Hornets.

Van Wormer wins NAHL honor

SAULT STE. MARIE — Traverse City native Jared Van Wormer won the North American Hockey League's North Division Star of the Week honor after putting up four points in Sault Ste. Marie's weekend sweep of Janesville.

Van Wormer, a former Traverse City Central and Traverse City North Stars standout, had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Jets Saturday and the only goal in a 1-0 win the previous day.

Van Wormer not only leads the Eagles in scoring this season with 24 points, but he is leading the NAHL in assists with 18 and is tied for second in scoring (24 points) and 14th in +/- rating (+10).

Bums sign pitcher from Auburn

TRAVERSE CITY — Right-handed pitcher Andrew Morris has signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums, adding another Auburn alum to the team's roster.

Morris recently completed his senior season at Auburn University Montgomery, where he went 5-4 with a 3.68 ERA. In 18 games (12 starts), he tossed 73.1 innings, striking out 67 and notching two saves.

As a junior, Morris pitched for Auburn University, where in 13 games he went 2-4 with a 7.31 ERA. Prior to his stint with the Tigers, the 6-foot-3 righty was a two-time NJCAA All-American at Gulf Coast Community College. In 2009 and 2010, he was 22-2 with a 3.31 ERA, striking out 237 batters in 201 innings.

Morris was also selected twice in the MLB draft, both times by the Milwaukee Brewers. Following his freshman season at GCCC, Milwaukee chose Morris with their 44th round selection and took him with their 16th round pick in 2010.

AUM has a history of producing players who have had success in the Frontier League, including Beach Bums All-Star first baseman Chase Burch.
