Community in Brief: 10/02/2012


Mullaly's 128 Studio & Gallery on River Street, Blue Heron Gallery on Ames Street, and Twisted Fish Gallery and StoneHedge Gallery on U.S. 31 will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. There will be artist demonstrations and refreshments at each gallery.

Alden Heritage Days

Alden — The Downtown Alden Business Association will sponsor Alden Heritage Days Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7.

Saturday opens with a 7-11 a.m. breakfast at the fire hall. There also will be sales at various businesses, a farmer's market, craft booths, pumpkin painting and kids' activities, and the Sprigs & Sprouts' apple and bake sale.

An 11 a.m.-4 p.m. vintage car show will be the highlight on Sunday. For details, call 676-3300 days only.

Hillbilly breakfast

Honor — The Honor Lions Club will host its annual Hillbilly Breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 7.

The meal will be served from 8 a.m. to noon at the Homestead Township Hall on Main St. Donations will be accepted; $5 per adult is suggested.

Harvest Festivus

Traverse City — Left Foot Charley Winery will thank the community for its support by hosting its sixth annual Harvest Festivus.

The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Grand Traverse Commons. There will be activities for children, winemakers in Lederhosen, cider, Federweisser, wine and wine tasting, German Oompah music from 2 to 4 p.m., and free horse-drawn carriage rides noon-3 p.m.

College planning

Traverse City — Central United Methodist Church will offer a "College Planning Relief Workshop" for families.

The free workshop will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 8 and 15, at the church, 222 Cass St. Topics include aid eligibility, where to find it, the real cost of college, and how to avoid overspending for college.

'Chapter Chicks'

Traverse City — Grade school girls and a special adult are invited to the Monday, Oct. 8, meeting of the Chapter Chicks Book Club at the Peninsula Community Library, 2699 Island View Road.

The group, geared toward third-fifth grade readers, will meet at 6:30 p.m. to discuss "Blue Willow" by Doris Gates. There also will be a potluck dinner and a craft.
