Fiber arts classes

Traverse City — Notably Natural Fine Yarns has launched "Fiber Arts Classes" on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday classes from 6 to 8 p.m. include Spinning and Plying Nov. 20, Beginning Crocheting Nov. 27, Fair Isle Dec. 4, Novelty Spinning Dec. 11 and Embellishments Dec. 18.

Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. is Open Stitch Night. Participants will be able to work on a holiday project. Also on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. there will be a Beaded Tree of Life Pendant and Fairy Ornament class.

A Holiday Card Making class with linoleum block printing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, and a Sculptural Wool Landscape class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.

Heffron honored

Traverse City — Tastes of Black Star Farms in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons will honor Dan Heffron at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 20.

The reception recognizes Heffron for his sixth place win at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. His entry was a fur seal carved from a single, black walnut log, which took approximately 4,000 hours of carving.

Tastes of Black Star Farms is located in the Mercato garden level in Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons. For details, call Amber Ressl, 944-1349.

Black Friday deals

Traverse City — St. Vinnies Thrift Shop, 1207 Woodmere Ave., will be open extended hours on Black Friday, Nov. 23, with special deals for shoppers.

Store hours on Friday are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Most items will be $1 each and shoppers can register to win a $50 St. Vinnies gift certificate.

The store also is in need of nonperishable food items for its food pantry. For details or to help, call the store, 947-8466.

KidzArt workshops

Traverse City — KidzArt, 129 E. State St., will offer a program on Black Friday, Nov. 23, to allow families to do holiday shopping while their children create gifts for Christmas giving.

The Black Friday Art Camp will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Space is limited to 24 students ages 5 to 15. The cost is $99 per child and participants will handcraft up to 10 different gifts, wrap them and create personalized cards for each.

There will be four more chances for area children to make gifts at KidzArt. Three-hour workshops will be held Nov. 24, Dec. 6, 13 and 15.

Alden illumination

Alden — The Downtown Alden Business Association invites the community to its "Alden Illumination" event.

The family event starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in downtown Alden. Activities include caroling, gifts for the children, refreshments, a visit from Santa, and the illumination of the Alden Christmas Tree. For details, call 645-1251.

Aging series

Traverse City — The Successful Aging Series at the Grand Traverse Pavilions on South Elmwood Avenue continues Monday, Nov. 26, with a program on Medicare changes.

The free program starts at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Fred Goldenberg, owner of Senior Benefit Solutions and the founder of the Senior Resource Alliance of Northern Michigan, will discuss the basics of Medicare and various parts of the plans associated with it. For details, call 932-3027.

Town Hall meeting

Acme — A non-partisan Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 28, will feature David M. Walker, former comptroller of the United States.

Walker will explore how the U.S. got to its "fiscal cliff" and offer a strategic plan for raising government revenue and capping federal spending at the 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Grand Traverse Resort. The program is free and open to the public.
