Elections today in Leland Township and Antrim County

TRAVERSE CITY — Residents of Leland Township can vote on a millage renewal to support township fire and rescue services.

The Leland Township Fire and Rescue Department is asking residents to renew two millages: one, a 1.3 mill, 2-year millage to fund emergency medical services and firefighting operations estimated to raise $522,240 in its first year; and another .5 mill, 4-year millage for equipment and training, estimated to raise $200,7000 in its first year.

“The residents have been real supportive of the fire department in the past. I have no reason to believe they won’t continue to support them,” said Fire Chief Richard Royston.

Residents of Antrim County also can head to the polls today. Those who live in the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District can renew a school millage that would pay for technology, Internet connectivity and career counseling service costs, as well as a career and technical education program.

Officials at the Charlevoix-Emmet school district are asking for a vocational-technical education millage renewal of .75 mill for four years.

The millage would affect people living in Banks, Central Lake, Echo, Jordan, Torch Lake and Warner townships.

Those living in the Ellsworth Community School district, which is part of the ISD, can vote on an additional millage renewal that would go toward building upkeep and renovation.

The proposed millage would levy 1.5 mills for the next five years.

School officials plan to use money provided by the previously approved millage this summer to build a new high school roof, remodel the high school computer lab, and update the elementary school fire alarm system, said Aaron Gaffney, the school superintendent and principal.
