College Sports Roundup: Lupu, Secord win MIAA titles

ALMA — Payton Lupu (Onaway) and Blair Secord (Gaylord) were both crowned champions in the hammer throw and shot put, respectively, at the MIAA Field Day.

Lupu won the hammer throw with a toss of 42.96 meters, also taking third in the discus (33.53) and third in the shot put (11.56). Secord won the shot put (12.23) and added a fourth-place finish in the discus (32.96).

MORE TRACK AND FIELD

AQUINAS: Tyler Johnson (Traverse City West) and Aaron Hodges (Cadillac) each contributed points to Aquinas’s fourth-place finish at the WHAC Championships.

Johnson took fifth in the 400 meters, running a time of 50.43. Hodges was second in the pole vault with a height of 4.6 meters.

CALVIN: Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan) took third in the steeplechase (11:17.01) as part of Calvin’s run to the MIAA title. It was the Knights’ 25th straight league crown. On the men’s side, Philip Spitzer (Buckley) ran a time of 15:28.27 in the 5,000 meters, which put him fourth, as Calvin won its 39th MIAA title.

DAVENPORT: Junior outfielder Ryan Manning (Suttons Bay) went 4-for-17 with two runs batted in as he started all six games the Panthers played this week. For the season, Manning is batting .304 with 17 RBIs.

HOPE: Boone Marois (TC Central) ran the anchor leg of the Flying Dutch’s second-place 400 relay team at the MIAA Championship. ... Jordyn Severt (TC West) was ninth in the high jump (4’9”).

LAKE SUPERIOR: Freshman Spencer Montcastle (TC West) took fifth in the steeplechase during the GLIAC Championships. His top finishes were second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 100-meter dash.

MICHIGAN TECH: Senior Patrick Spalding (Bear Lake) took sixth in the decathlon at the GLIAC Championships, one spot behind Montcastle. Spalding’s effort was the 10th-best in MTU history, and he earned all-GLIAC in the pole vault.

MICHIGAN STATE: Sophomore Connor Kostrzewa (TC West) was the hammer throw runner-up at Purdue’s Dave Rankin Invitational with a two-throw total of 194’9”, less than two feet shy of the crown. ... Sophomore Julia Otwell (TC Central) placed sixth in the 800 at Purdue’s Dave Rankin Invitational.
