Benzie man sentenced to life for wife's death

BEULAH -- A man who shot and killed his wife last year will spend at least the next 15 years in prison.

Benzie Circuit Judge James M. Batzer on Tuesday sentenced Deshawn Stanton, 27, to life in prison for the second-degree murder of Stephanie Stanton. Deshawn Stanton can be considered for parole in 15 years.

Authorities said Stanton shot Stephanie in a home along Cinder Road in Benzie's Homestead Township on May 6, 2012 during a heated argument. His attorney, Jane Johnson, told Batzer her client pointed a gun at Stephanie, but did not mean to pull the trigger.

Stanton pleaded no contest to second-degree murder.
