Leelanau park's portable toilet squashed

LELAND — A squashed portable toilet in a Leland Township park could cost taxpayers $600 if authorities can't find the hooligan or hooligans responsible.

A township property caretaker on Monday found the flattened commode at Hancock Field and reported it to Leelanau County sheriff's deputies. Sheriff's Lt. Clint Kerr said the incident probably took place late Friday or early Saturday.

Investigators believe a suspect drove an off-road vehicle with pronounced lug tires over the blue latrine. The malicious destruction of property comes with a $600 price tag, a cost that authorities want to pin on a suspect or suspects rather than be absorbed by Leland Township taxpayers.

People with information about the crime are asked to contact the Leelanau County Sheriff's Department's confidential tip line at 231-256-8696 or email
