BEULAH — Four Crystal Lake boaters were rescued after their undersized boat overturned in the wind and waves.
Benzie County Central Dispatch received a 911 call on Sunday at 8:28 p.m. reporting a boat had capsized off the southern shore near Shorewood Drive.
Authorities say a 14-year-old boy swam from the boat for more than a half-mile to find help for the three other victims — a 30-year-old male, a 23-year-old female and their 9-month-old infant. All victims were wearing life jackets, including the infant.
The boy reached a home where the residents called 911. The husband of the woman who called left in his own boat to perform a rescue before authorities arrived. Emergency personnel checked the victims as a precaution and released them with no injuries.
Authorities believe wind and wave conditions coupled with an under-sized boat were all factors in the incident. The boat was towed to the Benzie County Sheriff’s Department.
