Four golfers earn All-State
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central junior Amelia Pezzetti and Glen Lake freshman Nichole Cox were among four area golfers to earn first-team All-State honors in golf.
Pezzetti placed fourth in the Division 2 state finals with a 162, leading Central to a 10th-place team finish.
Cox was third in Division 4 with a 167 as Glen Lake came in seventh as a team.
Two Harbor Springs golfers — Ellen Breighner and Abby Detmar — were also selected to the Division 4 first team. They led the Rams to a sixth-place finish. Breighner shot a 183, Detmar 184 in the finals.
Grayling’s Whitney Schans was honorable mention in Division 4.
Pete Kelbel of Harbor Springs was the Division 4 regional coach of the year.
Traverse City Central’s Zoe Sobeck was an academic All-State pick. Traverse City Central; Glen Lake; Harbor Springs and Grayling won academic team awards for grade points over 3.50.
Weber, Hall on All-State teams
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Christian defender Daniel Weber and Bellaire forward Denny Hall were selected first-team All-State in their respective divisions by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Weber, who helped the Sabres reach the regional finals, was selected to the Division 3 team. Hall led Bellaire the semifinals in Division 4.
Earning second-team All-State honors were West goalie Justin Kraft and midfielder Cam Sipple in Division 1; Christian forward Jacob Rorick in Division 3; and Bellaire forward Hunter Rowe, Suttons Bay keeper Aaron Orban and Leland forward Noah Fetterolf in Division 4.
Third-team honors went to Christian keeper David Bump and Elk Rapids forward Andy Atkinson in Division 3; and Leland forward Henrik Ohr in Division 4.
Receiving honorable mention recognition: West’s Lucas Meyer in Division 1; Elk Rapids midfielder Preston McDowell and Christian defender Cam Beemer in Division 3; Bellaire midfielder Drew Emery, Charlevoix midfielder Davis LaBelle and forward Nick Snabes, and Suttons Bay midfielder Logan Mikesell in Division 4.
Petoskey senior forward Ethan Cartwright was a second-team selection in Division 2, and Northmen teammate Connor Ingelson — a junior defender — was an honorable mention pick.
Beach Bums sign FL vet O’Bryan
TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums have signed former Rockford Aviators pitcher Nathan O’Bryan.
The left-hander was 1-1 record in the 2013 season with a 6.44 ERA in his first year of professional baseball. The Washington native threw 36.1 innings last year allowing six home runs, 45 hits, striking out 23 and walking 14 in 35 appearances.
The 23-year-old O’Bryan (5-10, 185) also struck out 23 batters last year throughout 11 games. The 23-year-old graduated from St. Martin’s University.
